Scenes

Scene management, script parsing, scene detail tabs, and production organization

Scenes

Scenes are the fundamental organizational unit in Lazer. Each scene represents a distinct segment of your script, typically defined by a single location and time period.

Scene List View

The Scenes tab in your project displays all scenes in a grid of scene cards.

Scene Cards

Each scene card shows:

  • Scene Number - Sequential scene identifier (e.g., Scene 1, Scene 2)
  • Scene Heading - Location and time (e.g., INT. COFFEE SHOP - DAY)
  • Description - First few lines of action or dialogue
  • Shot Count - Number of shots defined for this scene
  • Asset Count - Number of generated assets
  • Thumbnail - Preview image from the first selected asset
  • Status Badge - Overall scene status based on asset workflow

Scene Card Actions

Click a scene card to open the scene detail view. Hover over a card to reveal quick actions:

  • Edit Scene - Modify scene heading or description
  • Add Shot - Create a new shot for this scene
  • Duplicate Scene - Copy scene structure to create variations
  • Delete Scene - Remove the scene (requires confirmation)

Scene IDs and Numbering

Scenes are automatically numbered sequentially based on their position in the script. Scene numbers update automatically if scenes are reordered.

Each scene also has a unique internal ID for database tracking, separate from its display number.

Creating Scenes

Automatic Parsing

When you upload or paste a script, Lazer automatically creates scenes based on scene headings:

  • Detects INT/EXT indicators
  • Identifies location names
  • Recognizes time-of-day indicators (DAY, NIGHT, MORNING, etc.)
  • Splits script text into individual scenes

Manual Scene Creation

Create a scene manually from the Scenes tab:

  1. Click "New Scene"
  2. Enter scene heading components:
    • Interior/Exterior
    • Location name
    • Time of day
  3. Add action description
  4. Save the scene

AI-Assisted Scene Generation

Generate scene descriptions using AI:

  1. Click "Generate Scene Description"
  2. Provide context: tone, style, key action
  3. Review AI-generated description
  4. Edit and approve

AI-generated descriptions serve as starting points. Always review and customize them to match your creative vision.
